Food Safety Information Sessions To Be Held in Charlottetown Next Month(CHARLOTTETOWN) November 24, 2015 - Two food safety information sessions will be held in Charlottetown next month for members of the PEI food sector. The Food Island Partnership is hosting these sessions with the help of Keith Mussar, biochemist and VP of Regulatory Affairs for the Canadian Association of Importers and Exporters.
John Rowe, founder of Island Abbey Foods and chair of the Food Island Partnership says, “We invited Mr. Mussar to deliver this information because of his wealth of experience and knowledge of the food industry. He serves on both the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Industry (CFIA) Advisory Committee and Health Canada’s Expert Advisory Committee. His 25 years of industry experience in the food industry coupled with his knowledge of the Safe Food for Canadians Act will be invaluable to all of us in the food sector of Prince Edward Island.”
The two sessions take place on December 17 at the Holman Grand Hotel in Charlottetown. The first session will focus on the Safe Food for Canadians Act and Regulation. Mussar will describe new food safety and regulatory compliance requirements and implications the regulation will have on PEI’s provincial food manufacturers and Island companies importing and exporting food items to other provinces, as well as outside of Canada. He will discuss the new CFIA food license including who is required to have one, and how to select the license most appropriate to a company’s needs. Participants will learn if they may be exempt from licensing requirements.
The second session will look at outcome-based regulation and how the Safe Food for Canadians regulation will change how Island companies work with CFIA. Topics will include: outcome based regulations versus prescriptive regulations; new evidence-based standards for compliance and implications for micro and small-sized companies; the use of company-based risk indices and the impact on inspection frequency, food safety, and compliance audits vs. product inspection; and Administrative Monetary Penalties for non-compliance.
